Africa Stacking Vessel - Jade
Africa is the first collection developed from soapstone, this particular material rough and soft in the meantime, playing with the contrast of glass and tenderness of wood.
Alike the other collections of Stacking Vessels, these pieces stand as sculptures when stacked, and become functional once unstacked, the three containers acting as independent bowls and vases.
Dimensions: height 35cm diameter 20cm
Dimensions are approximate, due to the handmade nature of the materials
Handmade in Europe, by individual craftsmen: handblown glass (Czech Republic), soapstone (Finland), hand turned wood (Finland). The materials then come to our warehouse in North Germany where they are fitted and assembled.
Craft Challenge: mining the initial soapstone billet to accommodate the diameter of the piece.
The soapstone we work with is mined from the ground in Finland, at the border with Russia. It was formed under the high mountains billions of years ago (Stone Age) before these same mountains levelled down (Ice Age), revealing soapstone, a hidden natural treasure. This dense and heavy material gets cut and shaped on a lathe in a small factory in rural Finland.
